Handbrake is the goto open-source program for ripping DVDs and re-encoding videos in Linux.

Some of the things you can do with Handbrake:

- Rip a DVD disc to a single movie file.
- Re-Encode videos to other formats
(such as encoding them into h264 format so they will be compatible with more platforms, or into h265/HVEC format for reduced file size)
- Resize video
- Crop video (get rid of black edges or watermarks)

FreeCAD, another open source CAD program available for Linux, is a general purpose CAD/CAE program.

It is good for mechanical engineering product design, with tools similar to Solidworks, Catia or Solid Edge.

You can read more about FreeCAD on the FreeCAD website.

You can install the latest, most up to date version of FreeCAD on Linux using the ZAP Appimage Package Manager with this command:

zap install --github --from FreeCAD/FreeCAD

Alternatively, you can also install FreeCAD using your Linux distro's built-in repositories using one of these terminal commands, (depending on your distro) but the distro version may not be up to date with the latest release.

apt-get install freecad dnf install freecad emerge freecad slackpkg install freecad yum install freecad zypper install freecad pacman -Sy freecad

Would you like to be able to use the same keyboard & mouse across all the computers on your desk? Well you can with Barrier!

Barrier is the open source software KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse) solution that will enable you to use a keyboard & mouse that is connected on one computer across all your other computers by simply moving your mouse pointer out of one screen & onto another screen. It even takes the clipboard with it to other computers, & other operating systems.

1. Install Barrier on the computer that has the keyboard and mouse, and set that computer as the "server".

2. Install & set up Barrier on any other devices that you want to access. Point those devices to your Barrier "server" IP address.

On Ubuntu based distros such as Ubuntu & Mint you can find Barrier in the Software Center, or type:

sudo apt install barrier

For other operating systems it's not so easy, and it's a real pain on MacOS. You have to go to the Barrier GitHub home page and and grab the version that works for that 👇 OS.

>Note: You may need to allow port 24800 on both machines, and/or disable SSL in Barrier settings.

Build Your Own Website

Building your own website is very easy and inexpensive . . . even for your own small business. The website can all be built on free and open source website code, all running on a free and stable Linux operating system with free and open source web server software such as Apache 2 or ngenix.

The few times we have done it, the total cost was $300-$500 to get it up and running, complete with professional looking photos.

The biggest cost is the amount of time you will put into creating your website. The second biggest cost is paying for "stock" photos ($200-$300). The third biggest cost is paying hosting fees ($100-ish/year), and the fourth biggest cost is buying a theme ($20-$60).

Make sure you get a good "Responsive" theme for your website so your website will render differently on a phone than it does on a computer.

The Internet Archive, home of the "Wayback Machine" has an "eBook and Texts Section" that has over 40 million texts, making it another good alternative to Amazon Books.

Their "eBook and Texts" area offers:

- 2.3 million eBooks that can be borrowed
- Digitizing Services if you want a book digitized

You can browse additional types of collections, such as videos, by going to the Internet Archive's home page and scrolling down.

Kdenlive is one of the better free and open source video editors for Linux that comes with more features than most basic video creators will ever need. They just released their latest version 24.05.1 a few weeks ago.

## In place of YouTube-dl

YouTube-DL is a popular command-line tool for downloading YouTube videos, Unfortunately their website is being blocked due to a tyrannical Germany court ruling. However, you can still access youtube-dl's GitHub website.

The (2021.12.17) stable version of YouTube-DL does not work anyways, but the nightly builds do . . . providing you know how to grab and install those.

Becasue of all the RIAA's legal drama causing issues with youtube-dl, many people have now switched to yt-dlp.

The version of yt-dlp from your repositories most likely does not work anymore, so you may need to grab 👉 the latest directly from GitHub, and execute it from within the directory you download it to.

Don't forget to give it executable permissions using the chmod command like so...
sudo chmod +x yt-dlp
Here is a quick, easy guide on how to use, and configure yt-dlp

Of course you can avoid all this hassle by installing BraveNewPipe onto your Android phone, using the Obtainium app manager, and then simply tapping the download arrow to download any video to your phone.

# Sayboard - Speech to Text Keyboard

Sayboard is a newer open source Speech-to-Text keyboard that you can run on DeGoogled phones, making it possible to have voice recognition without using any Big Tech spyware.

Sayboard is based on the Vosk project, and runs offline, which means all the speech recognition is done locally on your phone, without sending your data over the Internet.

Even though Sayboard is in it's early development, it works fairly well. It takes a few seconds for it to open up, and you must typep in puncuation as you go, but other than that, it transcribes fairly good.

You can install it and use it in conjunction with your current keyboard. Just tap the microphone icon on your keyboard, and then hit the "Ready" button to begin.

You can get the latest version on F-droid, or get the .APK installation package 👉 here.

# Setting Up Fonts in Linux

Here are 3 thing you can do to help bring standardized fonts to Linux systems.

1. Install Linux Mint fonts on your system. Fonts can vary from Linyx distro to Linux distro. Since Mint and Ubuntu are the most common, installing fonts used in those distros will generally make your system more "Linux standardized". See the bottom of this post to see how to do this because that command line is too big to put here.

2. Install freeware MS fonts. This will bring in the earliest MS fonts, but not anything from Win8, Win10, or Win11. To do this type:

sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

3. Copy Win fonts from a MS Win 10/11 computer. Install them onto your Linux Machine.

a. Copy all the fonts from C:/Windows/Fonts onto a flash drive. (A Ventoy Live USB drive works great for this if you use Ventoy to install Linux)

b. Find where your Linux system stores fonts. (/usr/share/fonts in Debian)

find /usr -iname \*.ttf |head -n 20

c. Create folder for the MS fonts

cd /usr/share/fonts/truetype sudo mkdir winfonts sudo cd winfonts

d. Copy fonts from USB stick. l (the "/media/user/drive/Fonts" will be different on your system)

sudo cp /media/user/drive/Fonts/*.ttf sudo chown root.root *.ttf sudo chmod 644 *.ttf sudo mkfontdir sudo fc-cache

# Install Default Mint Fonts on Other Linux Distros

To install the Linux MInt fonts (which should be the same a Ubuntu) you type in this command:
(It hasn't been verified that Mint and Ubuntu have the same fonts)

If a certain font is not available in your distro's repository, remove it from the command below. For example, MX Linux does not have fonts-khmeros-core, so you would remove that.

You can use the Open Printing website to look up a printer's Linux compatibility.

You can also select a manufacturer, and the website will categorize printers from that manufacturer, into these categories:

- Perfectly
- Mostly
- Partially
- Paperweight

Looks like there is much more support for printers since Android phones took off.

HP has been one of the manufacturers that has supported Linux with drivers for years, long before others started offering support, so HP is generally a good bet. Regardless, always make sure to check that a printer is compatible with Linux before you buy the printer, even HP printers.

Using Nextcloud & the Nextcloud Bookmarks app, you can synchronize bookmarks across ALL your devices, & across ALL your web browsers, as long as there is a floccus add-on extension available for your browser.

1. Install the Nextcloud Bookmarks app onto your Nextcloud Server.
a. Set up the Bookmarks
folder you want to use for
bookmarks, such as
/Bookmarks

2. Install the flocuss add-on extension into your web browser(s).
- Chromium based use this add-on
- Firefox based use this add-on

3. Once flocuss is installed in your browser:

a. In the floccus add-on,
sign into your Nextcloud
account, & set the
Nextcloud Bookmarks
folder. (i.e. /Bookmarks)

b. Tell the add-on which
browser bookmark location to
use. You can drag & drop
elsewhere later.

4. On Android install the floccus app, and sign it into your Nextcloud using your Nextcloud account. Bookmarks will sync to the floccus app, not the browsers.

Beyond Compare is an excellent compare tool that can run in Linux. It is perfect for syncing and merging files like pictures and videos between phones, computers and backup drives.

Beyond Compare is not FOSS, but of all the compare tools available for Linux, this one has the most features, and handles heavy workloads the best.

Features:

- Compares files, both binary and text, and it has amazing side-by-side text comparison features.

- Compare, sync & merge folders and files.

- Detailed image compare tool, down to the last pixel. There are better photo compare tools, but if you want to compare down to the pixel, this is the tool.

You can download the .deb file from 👉 Scooter Software, which will set up the PPA during install, & integrate it's right-click context menu options into the Nautilus and Nemo file managers.

A couple more good Free and Open Source file/folder compare tools for Linux are Meld and Kompare. Meld works similar to Beyond Compare, with the Nemo plugin installed.
